Traffic authorities ramp up operations for NYE weekend
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Road Traffic Management Corporation will be scaling up drunk driving operations to help prevent unnecessary loss of life this New Years weekend.

The traffic authorities will be intensifying law enforcement in cities, towns, townships and on national roads where increased traffic volumes are expected as holidays come to an end.
RMTC's Simon Zwane says they expect traffic volumes to swell between 1500 and 2000 vehicles an hour when holidaymakers return on Sunday.

" So far, there have been 455 roadblocks set up throughout the country. More than 970 000 vehicles have been stopped and checked, so we will continue with those."
"They have already been more than 4000 motorists arrested for various offences including drunken driving, excessive speeding and we want to urge them to drive with caution," says Zwane.
