Now serving as the acting National Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr Silas Ramaite's term in office comes after the Constitutional Court ruled the appointment of Shaun Abrahams to the NPA compromised the independence of the office.

Dr Silas Ramaite has been employed at the National Prosecuting Authority for about two decades. Briefly, here are top ten facts about Ramaite.

- Prior to his appointment, from 2003, Ramaite served as the Deputy NDPP responsible for Administration and Office for Witness Protection.

- From 2001 to 2003, Raimaite worked as Special Director of Public Prosecutions and as Director of Public Prosecutions for North Gauteng from 1998 to 2001.

- He holds a B.Proc from the University of Fort Hare, a Bachelor of Laws, Master of Laws and Doctorate in Law, from Unisa, specializing in Constitutional Law.

- He was granted the status of Senior Counsel (SC) in 2001.

- Ramaite is a former member of Lawyers for Human Rights. 

- He is also a Licensed Financial Analyst. 

- In 1997, he worked in the capacity of Chief Evidence Leader in the Goldstone Commission,  an inquiry investigating incidents of public violence and intimidation between July 1991 and the 1994 General Election. 

- He's worked as an interpreter, and Clerk of the Court. 

- He is a member of the Australian Institute of Governance and the Social Sciences Research Network. 

- Ramaite was admitted as an advocate of the Supreme Court in 1988.
