Tongaat taps ‘should be running again in couple of days’
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Taps
in Tongaat should be running again in a couple of days after being dry for six
months.
eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda says the local water treatment plant, Tongaat Water Treatment Works, which was heavily damaged during the floods in April will go back into commission from tomorrow.
Kaunda says reconstruction work has been completed ahead of schedule.
Speaking from the facility today, the mayor said there were a few more steps before water can reach households and businesses.
"As of tomorrow, the municipality will embark on the much-anticipated stage of recommissioning the plant to see residents receiving water from their taps. We are also going to use the commissioning period from the 27th of October to the 1st of November to fill the on-site reservoirs with treated water.

“This will include testing the quality of water to ensure that it meets all safety requirements. Once the reservoirs have been filled we'll be able to distribute potable water to the community."
Kaunda says the Hambanathi Reservoir will be filled first. " Hambanathi is one area that suffered a lot, it remained without water while other areas at least received some water from their pipes. The other reservoirs which will be filled are; Emona Reservoir, Metcalf Reservoir, Belvedere Reservoir, Tongaat South and Mamba Ridge-Jan Ross-Burbreeze System."
