Toddler dies after north coast rape

In another child rape case that has shocked KwaZulu-Natal, a north coast family is mourning the loss of their 2-year-old daughter who died after she was attacked - allegedly by a relative.

Police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says the child's mother had left her in the care of the relative at their home in the eSikhaleni area, near Richards Bay last week.

Zwane says the mother returned home the next day to find the toddler unresponsive.

"She was raped and become unconscious before passing away. Police have opened a case of murder and rape for further investigation," he said.

Zwane says the suspect has already appeared in court and remains in police custody.

Several child rape cases have been reported in the province in recent weeks, including the attack on a young Verulam girl - allegedly by her stepfather.

Police say the 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped and kept in a small room by the man.

Meanwhile, a man from Taylor's Halt, outside Pietermaritzburg was jailed for life after being found guilty of raping his own daughter.

He allegedly threatened the child with assault if she told anyone about the rapes.
