The gang is believed to have been behind the murder of 54-year-old Captain Dumisani Mhlanzi last month.

Mhlanzi was shot dead in an armed robbery at a supermarket in Maphumulo.

He had been off-duty at the time.

Officers swooped on the first suspect outside the King Edward Hospital in Umbilo yesterday afternoon.

They then descended on the notorious KwaMashu Men's Hostel at about 9 last night, where they came under heavy fire.

The second suspect was arrested in Ntuzuma.

Hawks spokesperson, Simphiwe Mhlongo says officers also recovered Mhlanzi's firearm.

Newswatch also understands that a bulletproof vest was recovered.

The two arrested suspects are due to appear in the Maphumulo Magistrate's Court tomorrow.
