A municipal protection officer and two security guards accused of impersonating police officers will line up in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Monday.
The three are also suspected to be involved in a robbery in Dassenhoek, west of Durban.
Police say members of the community in KwaNdengezi reported the suspects after noticing them driving around in a municipal vehicle for two days.
Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says after gunshots were heard, police intercepted the vehicle.
Gwala says they found a bulletproof vest, handcuffs, a track jacket and caps belonging to SAPS.
