Thoshan Panday's mother, wife, sister among more accused in World Cup case

Five more people - four of whom are family members of Durban businessman Thoshan Panday - have been formally charged in connection with the 2010 Soccer World Cup police accommodation graft case.

Panday, KZN's former police commissioner, Mmamonnye Ngobeni, former police officer's, Navin Madhoe and Ashwin Narainpershad are facing charges of fraud and corruption linked to the multi-million rand accommodation tender. 


The five new accused appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Friday. 


Panday's wife, Privisha Panday, his 70-year-old mother, Avenda Panday, his sister, Kajal Ishwarkumar, brother-in-law Seveesh Ishwarkumar and his former assistant, Tasleem Rahiman looked anxious as they appeared in court 10. 


They've been served with the indictments.



The Investigating Directorate's Advocate, Talita Louw told the court they were ready for the matter to be transferred to the High Court.

She said the State wasn't opposed to bail.


Magistrate Vanitha Armu ruled that Panday's mother, wife and sister would be granted R5 000 bail.


The businessman's brother-in-law and former personal assistance were granted bail of R10 000.


Outside court, the NPA's Investigating Directorate spokesperson, Sindisiwe Seboka says the four are mainly facing racketeering charges.


"These companies that they are standing before court representing were created in 2009 which was in anticipation of contracts that would have been released in 2010." 


All nine accused will be back in court at the end of the month.
