Temporary relief for shack fire victims

Social Development's urging with the residents of a Reservoir Hills informal settlement to prioritise rebuilding their lives again.

A fire ripped through hundreds of shacks last month, leaving more than 400 families homeless. One person was suffered critical injuries, later died. 


MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza visited the victims yesterday.

They are being housed in a marquee.

"They've lost the most important documents like IDs, they have lost uniforms. The kids might not be able to go back to school."


Khoza handed over relief packages to the residents. 


Human Settlement's Mbulelo Baloyi says building material's already been given to some residents.

"After the municipality's disaster management has processed everything, and Home Affairs for those who have lost their IDs. Then we offer them normally R8000 for each victim for them to buy building material to rebuild their dwellings," He says.
