Teen suffers spinal injury at north coast beach

A teenager is being treated in hospital for injuries to his spine after he was hurt while swimming at a beach in Salt Rock, on the north coast.
Medi Response paramedics treated the 17-year-old boy.
Spokesperson Janus van Schalkwyk says the incident left him paralysed.
"The patient was rapidly retrieved by KwaDukuza Lifeguards before being stabilized and transported to a nearby specialist facility by Medi Response paramedics. "

"This is the second incident in recent weeks where a patient sustained a spinal injury at one of our local beaches. There have also been two near drowning incidents over the last week where bystanders along with Medi Response paramedics were able to successfully resuscitate patients after being found unresponsive in a pool. The youngest of which is 5 years old.
"As we are moving into the festive season, please stay vigilant and ensure that you only swim at designated bathing areas that have lifeguards on duty."
