Teachers shouldn't be afraid to go to school: Sadtu
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Security needs to be improved at schools in KwaZulu-Natal, according to teachers' union, SADTU.
That's the call being made after the deputy principal of a Pietermaritzburg school was shot and killed in full view of pupils at the weekend.
Priscilla Mchunu was teaching matric pupils on Saturday morning when two gunmen entered the classroom and opened fire on her.
The union's Nomarashiya Caluza says they're appealing to the KZN Education Department to set aside a budget to address the issue of security and safety at schools.

"The MEC in the coming weeks will be presenting the provincial budget. We want to invite him to ensure that he sets set aside a sizeable amount to provide security in our schools because we can't be having a situation where teachers are afraid to go to school," she said.
SADTU officials will be visiting Mchunu's family as well as the school, Laduma High, where she had been a teacher for more than 20 years.
Police are trying to establish the motive for the killing - no arrests have been made yet.
