Teachers in KZN march over grievances: ‘We are tired of the employer’

Teachers on Friday marched to the Durban City Hall over frustrations, including late payment of funds to schools by the provincial education department.

They also want the Department of Education to fast-track the filling of vacant teacher posts.

 

The South African Democratic Teachers Union led the protest in KwaZulu-Natal.

"We are here since 2020 because we are tired, tired because of the employer for not paying us the pay progression that was supposed to be paid in July has never been paid up," one teacher said to Newswatch.

 

"Also, the teachers that are teaching in creches, they work there for a long, but are not absorbed. Instead, they are employing new people from outside. That is why we feel like right now is time to say away with that because we are really tired." 

 

Another teacher said they want immediate action to be taken by the department.

"There is a list of grievances, and today, we come out in our masses as a united whole, basically letting the citizens of this country who we are. 

 

"Sadtu is a force to be reckoned with, and if the Department of Education or our government don't recognise that we are a force to be reckoned with, then there is going to be huge problems for our country at large, with education being the most important sector."
