Natu disturbed by KZN Education’s financial woes

National Teachers'
Union (Natu) says it's worried about the financial health of KZN's Education
Department.

It's asked Basic
Education Minister Angie Motshekga to look into allegations of maladministration.
The union says public schools in the province received only 20% of their funding for norms and standards in May.
It says the department hasn't paid employees the 1,5% of their pay progression for 2022/2023 financial year.
Natu's Doctor Ngema says they are also concerned about the high number of teaching positions which remain vacant.

"The province of KwaZulu-Natal also has a problem settling the bills for electricity, such that we have learnt that four district offices that closed down in the province.
"Truro House is not working, Malgate Building is not working. The two districts in Durban, which are Umlazi Education District as well as Pinetown, are also non-operative because now the municipality has closed the supply of electricity. The department owes the municipality about R800 million."
