Teachers guilty of sexual misconduct will never work in a classroom again

Teachers' unions have welcomed the new conditions gazetted under the Employment of Educators Act.

Basic Education says going forward, teachers found guilty of sexual misconduct, cannot be hired for work again in a classroom in the country.
Other sex offences include assaulting a pupil or employee and having a relationship with a learner.
The ban also applies to those found guilty of grave, corporal punishment and serious crimes such as rape and murder.
Thirona Moodley who is with Naptosa in KZN says this sets a precedent in order to the department's position that the safety of the child and learner's right has to be protected from such person in the school environment.

"This was in the making and is finally here."
Sadtu's Mugwena Maluleke says the regulation isn't new for the SA Council for Educators which has had the rule in place for years.
"The council has already been removing any teacher found guilty of sexual assault and misconduct from the register and therefore wouldn't have a licence to practice anywhere."
