The teen faces a charge of assault for the brutal, public assault of the late Lufuno Mavhungu.

The incident took a tragic turn when Mavhungu, also 15, died by suicide.

It has since emerged that Mavhungu may have endured torturous bullying at the hands of school mates prior to the final blow.

The 15-year-old girl is the lone suspect at this point.

"The probation officers, together with police investigators are busy with her. She'll be dealt with in accordance with the Child Justice Act," police spokesperson Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed on Wednesday.

Mojapelo added police haven't ruled out additional suspects.

"We'll be looking at the other witnesses or any other person who might have taken a role in the assault but for now she's the only that has been arrested."

Mojapelo believes she will be placed in a place of safety while assessments are conducted.

It's unclear when she will make her first appearance at a children's court.

"Obviously, children at that age when they are arrested, it's either they are handed over to the custody of their parents or they are taken to the place of safety," said Mojapelo.

"But when we look at the nature of the crime itself, it's obvious she will be taken to a place of safety," he added.

The police have also opened an inquest docket to further investigate her death.
