Childline: Teacher sex offence screening must be ongoing
Updated | By Andile Tsotetsi
Childline KZN says it supports calls for a nationwide
screening to check if the names of teachers and education officials appear on
the sex offenders registry.

Build One SA made the appeal following the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl at her school in Matatiele.
The case has sparked national outrage and protest marches in several cities.
Childline's Adeshni Naicker believes it is a positive step.
"The screening process would help ensure that individuals with harmful intentions or past offences do not have access to children.
"This will help us create a safer, more trustworthy environment for not only learners but teachers and parents."

Naicker says the screenings should not be a once-off endeavour.
" It would be recommended that regular and ongoing background checks be done, not just a one-time screening.
"This would help ensure that individuals who may have been cleared at one point but have committed offences later are still caught."
