Taxi roadworthy inspection begins ahead of festive season

The South African National Taxi Council in KZN says it's begun checking the roadworthiness of all its minibus taxis ahead of the festive season.
Santaco's Sfiso Shangase says they're busy formalising a partnership with the Road Traffic Inspectorate to conduct daily roadblocks.
"We want to focus on human error and fixing them. We have to move roadblocks from Park Rynie, Umvoti Plaza, Mooi River Plaza."
"These are the areas that have interprovincial travelling as well as cross border travelling. And we want to check for COVID-19 compliance," he said.

It comes as Transport MEC Bheki Ntuli has been meeting with members of the taxi industry today to discuss compliance and commuter safety over the holidays.
He says between January and now, 1 492 people have died on the province's roads, a 27% decrease compared to the same period last year.
