Taxi industry must address safety and violence: Cyril Ramaphosa
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged the taxi operators to address the violence in their industry.
He delivered the keynote address at the opening of the three-day National Taxi Lekgotla, taking place in Boksburg.
"We also need to address a conflict resulting in competition over routes and the associated acts of violence and criminality that we often see."
"Just as the industry must itself address safety and violence," he said.
Ramaphosa says the taxi industry has been the backbone of transportation in the country.

He's pleaded with taxi bosses to maintain their vehicles to keep them safe for commuters.
"Badly maintained and old vehicles threaten the safety of passengers and other road users. We share a common aspiration to see the minibus taxi industry overcome its challenges."
The lekgotla is aimed to ensure the industry becomes professionalised, formalised and sustainable.
