'Broken' rape-accused stepfather walks away from trial

The Durban High Court has granted the request of the Verulam man on trial for child sexual abuse to no longer participate and be absent from proceedings from now on.

The 45-year-old is facing 56 charges relating to the alleged abuse of his stepdaughter.
Defence attorney, Thiagaraj Pillay today told the court his client's decision to no longer take part in proceedings had not changed.
The request to remain silent followed a drama-filled session yesterday afternoon.
The accused stormed out of the witness box during cross-examination and swore at the judge, prosecutor and police officers before he was calmed down.

Judge Mohini Moodley today ruled proceedings could continue in the absence of the accused.
She said the man would still need to come to the courthouse in case his attorney needed to take instructions from him.
He will not be physically in the courtroom but down in the grills.
Judge Moodley then adjourned the case to Monday for closing arguments.
