Taxi drivers due in court following Chatsworth protests

More than 40 taxi drivers are due to line up in the Chartsworth Magistrates Court next week following a standoff between the operators near RK Khan Hospital yesterday.

The conflict led to the closure of roads in the area, causing major traffic delays.  

One person, believed to be a security guard, was shot during during the chaos.  

The police's Thembeka Mbhele says 50 taxis were impounded.

"Some 40 suspects have been arrested for public violence and two for attempted murder," she said.


Mbhele says the taxi drivers will appear in court on Monday.

Protestors also took to the streets in Shallcross yesterday, complaining about having to walk long distances to reach the hospital, as taxis there have not been operating.

Meanwhile, national taxi association, SANTACO wants transport officials to review the application process for taxi permits. The group's Mathula Mkhize made the suggestion following yesterday's protest action in Chatsworth.
