Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
The taxi driver accused of causing the deaths of five pupils in Ntuzuma, north of Durban has abandoned his bail application.
Mondli Zisonge faces five charges of culpable homicide after the taxi he was driving collided with a bus on the first day back of the new school year.
It's alleged that Zisongo tried to overtake another vehicle - but collided with a bus - causing the immediate deaths of four learners. The fifth pupil - a Grade 11 pupil - died two weeks later from injuries sustained in the accident.
The National Prosecuting Authority's Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says the man will be kept in custody.
"The accused appeared at the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court where he abandoned his application for bail. The matter was remanded until March 17. The accused will remain in custody until then," she said.
