Taxi driver killed in south coast crash

A taxi driver has been killed after his vehicle collided with a truck on the south coast. The vehicle had been transporting children to school on the N2 in the Murchison area, just after Port Shepstone.

Emergency services say 14 children, aged between 6 and 16, had suffered multiple injuries.  

KZN Private Ambulance's spokesperson Craig Botha says the taxi driver died at the scene.

"Paramedics found that there were multiple casualties. One man died on scene due to his injuries. Four other people were critically injured, while eight others were seriously hurt. Two escaped with minor injuries," said Botha.

Botha says the injured were treated on scene before being rushed to hospital for further care.

Meanwhile, in a separate accident north of Durban, two men were killed when a bakkie transporting worshipers overturned on the N2 near Umhlali in the early hours of this morning.

Some 14 people had been travelling on the northbound lane when it is believed the trailer that the bakkie had been towing jack-knifed.

The driver then lost control of the vehicle.

IPSS Medical Rescue's Paul Herbst says they received alerts a little after midnight.

"We found a mass casualty situation. About 12 people sustained injuries ranging from moderate to critical. Two people died before Advanced Life Support paramedics arrived at the scene," said Herbst.

"All of the injured were stabilised on scene before being taken to different facilities for the treatment they required."
