Taxes, govt spending to take centre stage in Godongwana budget – economist

It is budget week and all eyes will be on Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana to see what relief, if any, he brings financially-stretched South Africans.

Godongwana will table his budget in Cape Town on Wednesday.
Efficient Group chief economist Dawie Roodt believes taxes and government spending will take centre stage.

"On the spending side, I think the Minister of Finance will extend the Covid grant and when to expect the basic income grant.
"Other expense items like the state-owned enterprises how much money they are going to get again.
"One of the major questions for the minister is how much of the debt of Eskom will the minister take over and some other variables like for example inflation and the exchange rate.”
