Saftu: High crime rate due to worsening socio-economic conditions
Updated | By Sandile Bhengu
Trade union federation Saftu believes the increase in crime is due to the country’s worsening in the country's socio-economic conditions.
The country's crime stats for the third quarter were released on Friday.
The stats, which were captured between October and December last year, show an increase in all contact crimes with over 7500 people murdered in that period.
"There were 56 cash in transit heists, 98 004 property related crimes including burglary, stock theft and motor theft," Saftu said in a statement.
Saftu also said some of the other reasons behind the senseless crimes were the unemployment rate and the increasing school drop out rates.
"Unemployment is over 12 million, and the neoliberal macroeconomic frameworks do not promise any hope of redemption through job creation. In the context of an estimated 37-40% of children dropping out of the schooling system before reaching matric, the growing legions of unemployed is increasingly unskilled."
