Sweetwaters tavern massacre suspects abandon bail bid

Four men arrested in connection with the fatal shooting at a tavern in Pietermaritzburg have abandoned their bid for bail.
Bonginkosi Zaca , Thembinkosi Malevu, Melizwe Mjwara and Sabelo Mabaso appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
They face four counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of ammunition.
Gunmen stormed the establishment in Sweetwaters and opened fire on patrons earlier this month.

The suspects - aged between 19 and 36 years - were arrested a week later. At their last court appearance, the matter was postponed for a bail application.
Four people were killed and eight others hospitalised.
The case has been postponed to 20 September 2022.
