Suspects in #Durbanbaby case to be sentenced
Updated | By Lethiwe Mdluli
Sentencing proceedings in the case of the missing Durban baby are set to get underway in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today.
The story grabbed national headlines in March last year when the city came to a standstill with people joining the search for the then one-month-old baby girl - allegedly taken during a hijacking in the city.
The little girl’s mother was arrested several days later for allegedly staging the incident.
She’s since pleading guilty to charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice after making a false statement to police.
"The accused in this matter pleaded guilty in December last year. She pleaded guilty to a charge of fraud as well as defeating the ends of justice and making a false statement. The matter was postponed to Monday, the 22nd of January, for a probation officer's report as well as sentencing," the NPA’s Natasha Ramkissoon-Kara says.
Ramkissoon-Kara says the baby’s biological father will also return to court today. He’s maintained his innocence and is standing trial separately.
