BREAKING: Mother in #DurbanBaby 'hijacking' case pleads guilty

The mother who led police on a massive search across Durban for her baby after she reported a staged hijacking has pleaded guilty in the Durban Magistrate's Court.

The woman and her boyfriend, the baby's biological father, had been charged with fraud and defeating the ends of justice after making a false statement to police on the 10th of March.

The woman appeared in court on her own this morning, with her attorney Mfanafuthu Biyela reading out a statement.

The mother kept her head down throughout proceedings in Court U, only looking up briefly when the court passed judgement.

The court accepted her plea and found her guilty.

The woman admitted she knew she was making a false allegation when reporting the incident to police.

A citywide search for the then 1-month-old baby was launched following the staged hijacking in Durban's Greyville area.

The mother is due in court again on the 22nd of January.

Her co-accused made a brief appearance earlier. He is due back in court on the 23rd of January.
