Suspected Durban serial rapist in court for bail application

A 50-year-old man accused of being a serial rapist is applying for bail in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday.

He was arrested in Malukazi, south of Durban, two weeks ago. 


Police believe he's the man who's been operating between Durban and Isipingo, attacking women for the last 14 years.

The latest case was reported last year.


The DA's women's network, DAWN, has been campaigning against gender-based violence.


They were at the court when the suspect last appeared.


The group's Shehana Kajee says they hope the judicial system does not fail the survivors.

"We are not keen on him getting bail at all. Also, the concern is that there were some instances where either the police or prosecution messed up and that was the reason why there were perpetrators that actually were granted bail. 


"So we are definitely hoping that everybody that is involved in this case does everything immaculately so that if he is really guilty, then he gets to pay the price for what he has done."
