Suspected Durban hijacker shot by accomplice dies

A suspected hijacker believed to have been accidentally shot by his accomplice in Durban has died.

The man was shot while they were apparently trying to hijack a bakkie in Verulam, north of Durban on Tuesday.

Reaction Unit South Africa said two men tried to hijack a bakkie at a set of robots in Ottawa area when the victims refused to give up the vehicle.

A scuffle broke out and one of the suspects allegedly fired four shots.

The driver was reportedly shot in the foot, while the gunmen's accomplice sustained a wound to the abdomen.

Reaction Unit says the suspects then fled the scene.

The bakkie, containing R100 000 in cash was found abandoned on the side of the road near a housing complex.

Response officers searched the area and found the injured suspect.

He died in hospital.

Police confirmed the incident, saying a case of carjacking and attempted murder is being investigated by Verulam SAPS.
