Police had been pursuing a gang of suspected robbers when a gun battle ensued - leading to a multiple car crash.

Three suspects have been killed and two officers wounded.

Police received information that a vehicle - thought to have been hijacked in Reservoir Hills earlier in the week - was going to be used in a robbery.

They spotted the car at a garage near the freeway and gave chase on the northbound carriageway

A shootout ensued and the suspects allegedly tried to force the police off the road.

Both vehicles crashed through the centre median and into oncoming traffic heading south.

A woman in a private vehicle sustained moderate injuries in the crash. Police arrested one suspect at the scene with a second being nabbed in the bush.

About ten to 15 pathologists who are on scene are having a look at the car in question - which is the Mercedes - which is believed to have hijacked at the beginning of the week.

They've removed the two suspects' bodies and were taking pictures of weapons that were inside the vehicle. The third body has not been moved from the bush area.

Earlier, police that went down into the bushy area on the highway were met with gunfire by the two suspects that escaped from the vehicle.
