Suspected Durban cop killer caught trying to board bus to JHB

A man arrested in connection with the shooting of a local police officer on the Berea in Durban - will appear in court today but not on a charge of murder.

Hawks officials say the suspect will first face charges of possession of a state-owned pistol before he's charged with murdering Constable Siphelele Cele.
Cele was shot after he and other officers flagged down the occupants of a vehicle on Friday for inspection.

They sped off but later ditched the vehicle in Sydenham. Cele later died in hospital.
National police spokesperson, Vishnu Naidoo says the suspect was caught in Pietermaritzburg. He was trying to board a bus to Johannesburg.

"Seeing the police, he tried to escape. With the help of the SAPS K9 unit the suspect was subsequently arrested."
"The suspect was charged got being in unlawful possession of a firearm. He was taken to Durban North police station where he was charged with the killing of the constable," she says.
