Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The man accused of starting a fire at Parliament has been denied bail.
The Cape Town Magistrate’s Court says Zandile Mafe has failed to prove exceptional circumstances that would warrant his release on bail.
Mafe was arrested inside the parliamentary precinct as firefighters battled the flames on 2 January.
The blaze caused extensive damage to the National Assembly and the Old National Assembly Chamber.
