Dercksen of Sodwana Bay was reported missing on 16 March when he failed to return home after he took a passenger out to sea.

His burnt-out charter fishing ski-boat was found washed up in Dobela on the Mozambican coastline the next day.

The passenger was soon spotted by holidaymakers in the neighbouring country, apparently in possession of some of Dercksen's items.

He was soon arrested by the authorities there for violating immigration laws.

South African police say they had been working with foreign law agencies to monitor the movement and activities of the suspect who is a South African national.

A close friend of Dercksen's says he hopes the suspect can provide answers for the skipper’s family.

"I just hope the family gets closure and he says what happened. I’m going through scenarios of what could have happened. We are all hanging onto hope that he is ok.

"I have been swimming with Matambu. I have dived with him and spear-fished with him. He can swim like a fish. If someone threw him overboard, he would have swum back - it doesn't matter how far, He wouldn't have given up. He only saw the good in people.”
