Survivors of Durban serial rapist to receive support

Social Development officials in KwaZulu-Natal say the survivors of a serial rapist who's been attacking women in Durban for over a decade will be provided with psycho-social support.

Police arrested a suspect in Malukazi, south of the city, on Sunday.


The 50-year-old man made his first appearance in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Police say 22 cases have been opened, with the first reported in 2008.


They say unsuspecting women were targeted in the Durban CBD. 


Their attacker would ask them to accompany him to Isipingo, claiming he didn't know the area very well.


"The department will actually put together a team of social workers who will work together with the victims and the police to ensure that they secure victims,” says KZN Social Development spokesperson,Mhlabunzima Memela.

"That is why the MEC for social development Nonhlanhla Khoza has already called on some of the victims to come forward in order to be able to get services from the social workers, psycho-social support so that you prepare them when they go to court and be able to testify about their ordeal."
