Student union condemns UKZN violence
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
A student union has condemned the violence that broke out during a protest at UKZN's Westville and Howard campuses - saying there's no need for destructive behaviour.
Disgruntled students protested on Tuesday against the apparent suspension of around 300 cleaning staff who had complained about their working conditions.
Property was destroyed and classes disrupted.
Thabiso Phungula, who's with the Democratic Alliance's student organisation, says they were told that two students were shot and are in hospital.
A security guard hut was burnt down and two campus vehicles set alight.
"We condemn the destruction of property. We understand that violence does not solve anything either than delaying progress.

"Right now we extending registration where academics have been delayed and because of the ongoing strikes, the students who were meant to write exams could not not write."
UKZN has said in a statement that it cannot comment on the suspended staff out of respect for employer-employee confidentiality.
It said calm has been restored at both campuses.
