Members from the South African Municipal Workers Union downed tools last Tuesday, demanding a salary increase in line with other municipalities.

The strike action has led to a disruption in clinics, refuse collection and street-sweeping services.

It’s also led to prolonged power and water outages in some areas.

The municipality's spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana, says the workers will now have to provide reasons as to why they shouldn’t be dismissed.

"Working with law enforcement agencies, the city is strengthening security at its various depots to allow employees to carry out their duties. This includes monitoring reservoirs without being threatened by striking employees

"Working with various law enforcement agencies, safety measures continue to be implemented to ensure the wellbeing of Municipal staff and residents during this time. This includes a police escort for staff to service delivery points, which include clearing roads, clearing electricity faults, water leaks, burst pipes, and refuse removal."
