Stove possibly started fatal Durban CBD flat fire, says firefighters
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
eThekwini firefighters say preliminary investigations into a fire at a block of flats in the Durban CBD, indicate a two-plate stove that was being used could have started it.

A teenage boy died after the blaze spread through one flat on the sixth floor of the building on Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street.
Two other children and two adults from the same family were treated for smoke inhalation.
Acting Division Commander for Durban Central, Mazwendoda Makhanya says the entire flat was engulfed by flames.
"We interviewed the people that were close by, they mentioned to us that there was one person that was not accounted for so we sent the fire team to the 6th floor to do a snap rescue."

"It was a 13-year-old boy, we took him out of the apartment and we started to do a CPR on him on the corridor. We then requested help from medical services unfortunately the boy succumbed to his injuries."
Makhanya says they made another discovery about the flat.
"On further investigation you can see it was one apartment, but it was partitioned off and there were smaller rooms that were made."
"The brigade managed to stop the fire from spreading either side and below the apartment, it was a big fire."
