Still no protection for witness in Moerane Commission of Inquiry
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
Anti-corruption activist, Thabiso Zulu says threats on his life escalated after his appearance before the Moerane Commission - established to probe political killings in KwaZulu-Natal.
Zulu appeared before the commission months ago. And the former KZN ANC youth leader, says the State still refuses to offer him any sort of protection.
"That's not fair - why in the first place did they agree that we must appear before the commission when they know that they can't protect private citizens," he said.
The Public Protector last month raised concerns about the safety of whistle-blowers like Zulu.
He addressed the media at the Premier's office yesterday, where the commission's long-awaited report was finally handed over.
"They asked for documents from us. Why did they ask for documents from private citizens that they can't protect?" he said.

Zulu says two threat assessments have turned up positive results.
"I've been assessed by the State more than two times - by crime intelligence in December, and by State Security Agency in May. Without getting into detail of what the threat assessment reports are saying - I can tell you that both threat assessment reports are saying it's positive that there are threats in our life, but the State remains adamant that they are not willing to provide security to private people," he said.
A briefing on the report is expected soon.
