Family of Umzimkhulu victims expected at Moerane Commission

The Moerane Commission of Inquiry - probing cases of political violence in KZN resumes today.
The commission’s Solo Mdledle says the witnesses who will testify this week were friends with victims from Umzimkhulu in southern KZN.
"We do have witnesses lined up but it depends on whether they come or not. We expect some witnesses from Umzimkhulu but because they're family members - their names cannot be revealed at this time," he says.
Umzimkhulu has been a hotbed for political violence in recent months with several ANC councillors gunned down in the Harry Gwala District last year.

Mdledle says the witnesses will remain anonymous for their own safety.
"We've had some concerns from various sources about names being revealed before. It goes without saying that some witnesses will fear for their lives but some witnesses come voluntarily and they do not have any problems," he says.
In previous sittings, it had emerged that hitmen were being hired from Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi, south of Durban, for the murders of councillors across the province.
