The trial resumed on Monday.

The woman and the grandmother are charged with the three-year-old Chatsworth child's murder in 2014.

The neuro-psychologist who found that Baby X's mother is cognitively impaired will be cross examined by the state today in the Durban High Court.

Yesterday, Dr Rosanne Hardy was called by the defence and she told the court that baby X's mother is cognitively impaired.

The court heard that due to a severe brain injury the woman suffered in a car crash 16 years ago and substance abuse, her ability to make judgement and control her behaviour would have been impaired.

Hardy said this meant the child's mother's ability to carry out her role as a parent would have been affected.

Hardy found that the 34-year-old mother could understand and recognise the abuse of her children but because of her cognitive defect - she could not do anything about it.

The court also heard that a neuro-surgeon diagnosed baby X's mother with cerebral atrophy in 2005.
