State confident in 'strong' case against Panday and Ngobeni

The NPA believes it has a strong case against Durban Businessman, Thoshan Panday and former KZN Police Commissioner, Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
The duo, and former officers: Navin Madhoe and Ashwin Narainpershad, are accused of fraud and corruption linked to a multi-MILLION-rand police accommodation tender for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
The State asked for a four-week adjournment in the Durban Magistrate's Court yesterday - to obtain a racketeering certificate. But the defence slammed the request.
Attorneys argued their clients' case had been put on the court roll prematurely. Here's the Investigative Directorate's Sindi Thwala.

"We are very thorough and we are making sure that by the time that this case actually goes before court fully so that the accused will be able to respond.
"The accused that is before the court, we believe we have a strong case against them and when the time is right we will return on the 17 December. We should be able to handover the indictment," she said.
"What I must also stress, is that whether or not the racketeering certificate is received or not. It does not mean this case will fall over because the charges which we have on the indictment, will still stand."
