Spate of school shootings leaves sector reeling

A student teacher who was shot in the head outside a school
in in Newlands West has died.
"The educator that was shot at from Riverdene School yesterday morning died in the evening.
"The circumstances surrounding the shooting aren't yet clear, what we do know is that the student-teacher was shot in the head," says the Department of Education's Muzi Mahlambi.
But while another community's left reeling from a gun attack, education officials say they're worried about the recent spate of shootings as schools have become soft targets for criminals.
"The recent summit that was held last week to discuss all strategies of combating crime in the province, we are also hopeful that we will also benefit from the strategies," says Mahlambi.
Just last week, a pupil at Phambili Secondary in Sea View was shot by a Grade 10 pupil.

In May, a Sea Cow Lake Secondary school teacher was gunned down by robbers in front of pupils.
Mahlambi says they are looking at enhancing security at schools.
