Sonke Gender Justice's Wessel van den Berg says, while they do not know the circumstances of this specific case, it is not the norm.

"The popular opinion gets shaped that men are equally at risk of violence perpetrated by women, as much as women and other men are at risk of violence perpetrated by men. The overwhelming majority of incidents where violence is used is when men are using violence," he said.

"It's actually true that more men are killed by men in South Africa than women are killed. The point is that its men using violence."
