South Coast residents struggling without adequate water supply

Some residents on the extreme KwaZulu-Natal south coast are struggling with everyday tasks like bathing and flushing toilets due to continuing water issues in the area.

Parts of the Ugu District Municipality are again without an adequate water supply, with the taps running dry in some areas two weeks ago.

The municipality says several pump stations were damaged by the recent heavy rains and floods.  Spare parts had to be sourced from outside the area.

Leisure Bay resident, Vanessa Murray says she is lucky enough to have a water collection tank and pool for washing, but not drinking.

She has been allowing neighbours to shower and collect water at her home, but it is not enough for everyone.

"These people can't do their washing and have to buy drinking water. You have to fill your cisterns to flush your toilet. It's an absolute nightmare," Murray said.

She says in extreme cases, some people have no access to the resource.

"You have people that have no collection tanks. Some people are bedridden and can't even get to water."

The municipality has apologised for the inconvenience and says crews are working to repair the pumps.
