South Africa's gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by 51% in the second quarter of the year as the COVID-19 pandemic took its toll on the economy.
It's the steepest decline in six decades.
Statistics South Africa released the figures on Tuesday.
They show household spending on most products declined in April, May and June - in line with the closure of stores, transport services, recreational facilities, restaurants and other businesses.

The alcohol and cigarette bans also contributed to this.
The figures have revealed consumers spent more on communication - as some had had to work and study from home due to the country being on national lockdown.
