South Africa’s bloodstock nearing critical low

The South African National Blood Service is appealing for donations before it reaches a crisis.

 It says it only has enough blood supply for two days in KwaZulu Natal. 


The COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent lockdown have badly affected their supply. 


The blood service's Sifiso Khoza says measures have been put in place to keep donors safe.


"Winter months are the most difficult months for the South African National Blood Service.

Khoza says it's flu season and the bank needs to be on a five-day stock and nationally, they are on a three days stock.


Khoza's encouraging people to donate blood on Mandela Day as part of their 67-minutes of giving back:


"All it takes is 30 minutes to donate one unit of blood and that unit of blood can save up to three lives."
