Over 6,000 inmates released on Ramaphosa's special parole
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
The Department of Correctional Services says it has released over six thousand inmates on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s special parole.
In May, Ramaphosa authorized that 19,000 low-risk offenders would be released to reduce overcrowding and combat the spread of COVID-19 in prisons.
At least 281 former offenders from five prisons in KZN’s Pietermaritzburg Management Area have since been released.
The Department’s Logan Maistry says the department is also making progress in terms of placing low-risk inmates on parole.

To date, they have released a total of 6791 inmates across South Africa.
"This requires meticulous progress which involves DNA samples by the South African Police," said Maistry.
"The low-risk inmates released have undergone relevant rehabilitation programmes aimed at correcting their offending behaviour.
