Videos began emerging in the afternoon of rough winds and heavy downpours after forecasters published a level 2 storm warning for eThekwini.

The footage shows a weather event which appears to be a tornado barrelling through the area.

Newswatch spoke to emotional and terrified Inanda residents who have been scrambling to rebuild their homes after the storm ripped through the area.

Residents told Newswatch the storm brought with it heavy rains and extremely strong winds that moved in a circular motion that left them fearing for their lives.

In Dube Village, strong winds blew off the roofs of several homes while others were left completely destroyed.

Most of the streets in the area were covered in darkness as street lights were damaged and most of the area’s main roads were completely flooded.

Members of eThekwini’s neighbourhood watch groups were on the group last night, assisting families whose homes were damaged.

The group’s Brenda Mkhwanazi said they also began looking for alternative accommodation.

“The damage was very bad. Most of the families were left homeless with no roof,  no furniture, nothing. No food, no clothes because it was raining. Some of the families, we’ve tried to take them to the nearest school we have.”

A government delegation, including Minister of Human Settlements Mmamoloko Kubayi, KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube and eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, will visit the area on Wednesday morning to assess the damage.

Meanwhile, the SA Weather Service says it's still analysing information to determine if a tornado hit Inanda.

It has released another alert for eThekwini and Ugu, saying disruptive rain in these parts may lead to more localised flooding.
