Solidarity, AfriForum head to court over state of disaster

The
Solidarity Movement and AfriForum will head to court in an attempt to force
government to end the national state of disaster.
The trade union and lobby group say there are no further reasons why the current state of disaster should remain in place for longer than the 22 months it has been in force.
Government recently extended the state of disaster, which was implemented due to the Covid-19 pandemic, to 15 February.
Connie Mulder, who is the head of the Solidarity Research Institute, says the current state of disaster creates major uncertainty for workers, companies, and the education system in general.

"After Omicron it has become abundant that Covid has gone from pandemic to endemic. This means we have to find a way to live with it. There is no reason for a state of disaster anymore.
“We got massive amount of natural immunity as well as vaccination and that means we need to start lifting the state of disaster to give certainty to the sectors of the economy we need to plan and we don't want to find out on a Sunday night that they will not have a job on Monday with immediate effect.
“That is why we are going to court. If there is not disaster anymore there is no reason for a state of disaster.
