Social workers helping PMB family following alleged child rape

A team of social workers has been sent to provide counselling to a Pietermaritzburg family struggling with the alleged sexual abuse of their two young children.

Child Abuse

A 14-year-old male relative is said to have molested the two boys, aged 15-months and five-years-old.

According to the children's aunt, the older boy alerted his mother, telling her his body was sore.

The children were taken for a medical examination and the police were called afterwards.

Police have confirmed a double rape case is being investigated.

The teenager had been staying with the family, but he's since been moved out of the Imbali home.

The children's aunt says they're still worried because he's now living with another family.

KZN SAPS spokesperson, Thembeka Mbele, says because the alleged perpetrator is a minor, he'll be dealt with through the Child Justice Act.

"We cannot just arrest him. We need to do a proper investigation before we arrest someone. We can confirm that the child has been removed from the area" Mbele said.

Spokesperson for Social Development in KZN, Mhlabunzima Memela, says the family will be provided with psychosocial support.

"We know the children will take some time to cope with the situation that they encountered."
