Ntombenhle Mchunu, who was 75-years-old, was attacked by armed men who broke into her home in Kasishwili on Sunday.

They fired several shots before fleeing the Bhethani area.

Mchunu's four-year-old grandson is in a critical condition in hospital.

The NFP's secretary-general Canaan Mdletshe says the slain councillor was a dedicated community servant.

"She worked tirelessly for the people of Nongoma she was the voice of widows in the area, a voice for the poorest in society. She led programmes and projects that were aimed at elevating poverty in child-headed families."

The police's national task team on political killings has been activated.

Mchunu's murder comes just three weeks after another councillor Nonhlanhla Zungu in the area survived two attempts on her life.

Mdletshe says the threats began after the NFP, ANC and EFF formed a coalition in Nongoma Municipality.

"Three weeks ago there was a voice note circulating where an individual was calling on men in KwaNongoma to stand up and defend and make sure they regain that part of KwaNongoma, and even went as far to say that the NFP is going to be in charge of KwaNongoma for only three weeks.

"With this, you can collect from the day the voice note was made, to what has been made, tells you that the councillors here have always been under siege."
